If more company leaders followed this example of selflessness instead of being so fucking greedy the economy wouldn’t be so shitty. I mean really, just how much money do you really need to have.

It’s true. He actually cut his pay down to $90,000 not $100,000.

That’s just Japanese culture. I want to stress that just because he is willing to take a cut, that shouldn’t set the standard. If businesses felt that it was in their best interest to cut CEO salary instead of making other cuts, they would. And depending on the industry and climate, many CEOs are being paid well because of the significant risk and criticism they absorb for the company. Personally, I wouldn’t take a job in which I was constantly criticized and which escalates my risk of ulcers/a heart attack, unless I was being paid a six-figure salary. This man’s sacrifice is not a free pass to attack the morality of successful people. Many wealthy people donate a significant amount of money to charitable causes and because they earn so much, are able to donate more than the salary they would have been paid in those charitable industries. That doesn’t make them greedy.

The economy is not doing well because of unsound monetary and fiscal policies, as well as the irresponsible spending behaviors of consumers and fraud. Greed by politicians and, in some cases, consumers is the root cause of this economic climate. The bad seed CEOs aren’t a problem unless they’re committing fraud (with the assistance of the government 9 times out of 10).

The worst thing about all this, is that it ignores cultural differences, in which Japanese culture is far more collectivist than American culture; it also ignores the fact that Japan has experienced a long-run depression due to fiscal and monetary policies that have created zombie banks and shrunk capital investments; and it ignores the fact that most CEOs in the United States have been quite successful even during the recession.
